Mati's HomestayDantu · Darma Valley

FAQ

Short answers to what guests usually ask.

How much does a night cost?

₹1,000 per person a night. All meals, tea and water are included. Whether you share a room or have one to yourself, the price is the same. Tips are welcome, never expected.

How do I book?

Call Mati or send her a WhatsApp message. She answers herself. The network in Dantu is not stable, so a reply can take a while. Please write your dates and how many you are.

Is there mobile network or internet?

There is mobile network in Dantu, but it is not stable. Dharchula has the best network in the region. There is no Wi-Fi.

What is there to eat?

Local food from the valley: breakfast and dinner, lunch if you stay longer, non-veg on request, tea and chutneys. All included in the price. We were served homemade rotis, dal and eggs in gravy. You can ask for something special: for us, Mati gladly made a traditional Kumaoni millet dessert.

What are the rooms like?

Two guest rooms with three beds each and thick blankets. If needed, there are two more beds in Mati's own room. Share a room or have one to yourself, same price.

What about toilets and washing?

There are two tiled toilets for guests, one Western and one squat, and there is hot water.

Is there electricity? Is it heated?

Yes, there is electricity. The guest rooms aren't heated, but the blankets are thick and warm enough. There is a stove in Mati's kitchen and living room.

How do I get there?

By road from Dharchula, 4 to 6 hours on a rough road; a 4x4 is recommended. Jeeps with driver and shared jeeps leave from Dharchula. See Getting here.

Do I need a permit?

Not for Dantu. Leo (Germany) and Sumit (India) didn't need one in October 2026, and there were no checkposts on the way. You only need a permit if you continue to Om Parvat or Adi Kailash: Indians get it in Dharchula, foreigners apply online via e-FRRO, like Leo did. Carry your passport or ID anyway.

When is the homestay open?

TODO Ask Mati.

How do I pay?

TODO: cash, UPI?

What should I bring?

Warm clothes: mornings and nights are cold at about 3,290 m. We were there in mid-October. TODO: anything else Mati recommends (torch, sleeping bag?)
